— Jaime carson

Most of the adults these days especially girls get frightened by the mere occurrence of small acne or a pimple on their skin, especially when it appears on the face. To overcome from this condition they try to make every possible effort to fizzle it out and sometimes they get succeeded also, but just imagine if none of your salicylic acid creams works and that Colgate paste doesn’t help with your skin acne any more, then you might start to startle a bit. Now the question arises what kind of acne is this which can not be cured with your daily medicated creams or natural hacks. In this case there is a possibility of some hidden skin disorder that you might not be aware of has taken a grip over your skin and one of those skin disorders can be MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM.

What does it look like?

  • Molluscum contagiosum, also known with the name of water warts, is a viral infection caused by a poxvirus, which appears like a raised bump on your skin, inflamed lesions with a small dimple or pit in the centre.
  • It can appear alone as a single bump or it can also be present in the form of clusters. In most people, these lesion range from pea-sized to as large as a size of an eye and it may appear on any part of your body including face, hands, legs, abdomen, back and genital parts.
  • Sometimes it becomes difficult to differentiate between normal acne and these lesions, but molluscum lesions are painless and appear like a white pearl, so with a proper watch you can identify these on your skin. The exact reason behind the appearance of Mollusca is not completely known, but if your immunity is compromised in any way or you come in direct contact with this virus through a person, towel, clothing and bedding then it might enter your skin through cracks.

How it can be treated?

  • Molluscum contagiosum is most prominent in children as they are vulnerable to infections, however, it’s not that harmful if diagnosed early.
  • It can be resolved within 2-3 months if unnecessary scratching or rubbing is avoided, but sometimes it gets unnoticed and starts spreading making it more severe, due to which it can take as long as 4 years to disappear on its own(depending on your immunity).
  • As it’s a virus it gets spread easily either from direct physical contact or by touching the object which has this virus on them like towel, clothing and other things. It becomes very important to keep a check on your hygiene so that you don’t pass this virus to others.

Molluscum contagiosum treatment can be followed in many ways but it highly depends on the severity with which you have been hit by this infection and according to your gravity the doctor will suggest the course of action. Some of the treatments that are used by the doctors are-

  1. topical treatment-use of creams or ointment like tretinoin, cantharidin and other chemical agents on the surface of the wart
  1. laser treatment to burn the lesions
  1. cryotherapy-to freeze the bump and then using sharp objects to remove it
  1. curettage-squeezing the bumps and removing the contagious centre by using scalpel or tweezers
